“George’s Morning Hours” is a painting depicting a clown whose day is just not going well at all. The painting was done while in college and was selected to be shown in the yearly art exhibit.

This painting was part of a series depicting clowns and masks in general. In life we can all wear “masks” and hide our true selves in public. Clowns are a physical depiction of that dynamic. Along with that, I think the subject of clowns also already has a loaded response from the audience. Most people have a negative stigma to clowns due to horror movies and stories, so depicting them in a less-than-ideal situation becomes a more charged experience. Most people have trouble pitying the clown, as they already judge the clown to be dangerous or an enemy.
